Wolves split doubleheader at LMU
Saturday, April 2, 2011

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry College Wolves baseball squad made an impressive comeback in the first game of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial, but the homestanding Railsplitters pulled off the win in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Wolves put up a huge inning in the second game and held on for a 7-5 win.

The two teams will complete the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 11, Newberry 10
The Wolves tied the game up in the top of the ninth inning, but LMU center fielder Cody Pack hit a walkoff RBI single to give the home team the win in the day's first game.

LMU started the game off on fire, scoring four runs in the first inning and three runs in the second to take an early 7-0 lead. Gelson Perez hit a two-our RBI single in the first followed by a three-run homer by Eric Kitts. In the second, the Railsplitters used a leadoff solo homer by Deaun Williams, a double from Juan Alvarez and a single by John Couch. Perez scored on an error in the fifth to push the lead to 8-0.

Newberry finally got its offensive punch started in the seventh inning, Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.), Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) and Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) hit three straight singles, with Gray's putting the first run on the board. Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) narrowed the deficit to 8-4 with his first homerun of the season. LMU's Joseph Horsley made it 9-4 with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

The Wolves' offensive assault continued in the eighth inning as they took advantage of an LMU outfiled error. Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) hit a one-out double followed by a Cox walk and Goodwin single loaded the bases. With two outs, Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) hit a ball to right field, but the fielder couldn't record the out, scoring two. After a Scaggs single, an RBI walk by Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) and a two-run double from Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) tied the score at 9-all.

LMU's Nolan Woody gave the Railsplitters a lead in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out RBI double, but the Wolves managed to tie the game at 10-all in the top of the ninth without having to record a hit. Vogel was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advaced to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.

However, it was the Railsplitters' Pack who notched the winning RBI after Cody Baker led off the innning with a single, went to second on a groundout and went to third on a balk. Pack's single gave the hosts the win.

Scaggs led the Newberry offense after coming in as a picnh hitter, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs on the homer and two runs scored. Love was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI walk, while Goodwin went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Wade Ruff (Rock Hill, S.C.; 0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing the winning run to reach base in the ninth.
