Wolves blanked by Limestone, 7-0
Tuesday, March 29, 2011

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves baseball squad could not generate the offense needed to earn a season sweep of Limestone College, as the Saints earned a 7-0 win at Bob Prevatte Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Newberry falls to 15-20 overall with the loss and travels to Lincoln Memorial on Friday and Saturday for a South Atlantic Conference series. The Friday game is set to start at 4 p.m., while the Saturday doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start.

Despite the shutout, the Wolves had multiple chances to score, ending five innings with a runner in scoring position and four innings with a runner on third. Newberry had runners on first and third with one out in the first, but a strikeout and a runner caught in the first-and-third play ended the threat. In the second, the Wolves loaded the bases with one out, but hit into a double play to end the inning. Limestone scored first in the second inning when Joe Maloney scored from third as the Wolves turned a double play, making it 1-0.

Newberry only had two baserunners in the next four innings, as Limestone's Jeremy Peed moved to 2-1 this season with 6.0 shutout innings. Limestone scored once in the fourth inning and put up three unearned runs in the fifth to pull out to a 5-0 lead. Newberry's Alex Brown (Columbia, S.C.; 0-1) was hit with the loss after allowing two runs in 3.0 innings.

The Wolves loaded the bases with one out once again in the seventh inning, but could not convert and pinch hitter Caleb Brazell (Blythewood, S.C.) was stranded on second after an eighth-inning double. The Saints insured their lead in the eighth with a pair of runs and Newberry's Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) was stranded on third base in the ninth inning to end the game.

Gray went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Wolves, while Brazell, Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.), Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) each collected hits.
