Wolves swept by Tusculum

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves dropped a pair of games to the visiting Tusculum Pioneers in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday at the Smith Road Complex. The Pioneers earned a 10-1 win in the first game and won the second game, 11-5.

Newberry falls to 15-19 overall and 8-10 in SAC play with the sweep and Tusculum is now 24-9 overall and 11-7 in league action. Newberry plays its next eight games on the road, starting with a Tuesday game at Limestone.

Game One: Tusculum 10, Newberry 1
The Wolves took an early 1-0 lead but the Pioneers rattled off 10 unanswered runs to take the first game of the day.

Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) led off the bottom of the first with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) to put the Wolves up early. The Pioneers took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Payden Houser and an RBI single from Lukas Graves in the second and pushed the lead to 3-1 in the fourth on an RBI single by Branfy Arias. Rolondo Bonner drove in two runs with a two-out single in the sixth to make it 5-1 and Houser's second sacrifice fly of the game in the seventh inning made it 6-1.

A two-run throwing error extended TC's lead in the eighth and Cody Coffman led off the ninth with his second homerun of the season. Houser wrapped up the scoring after scoring on a wild pitch after reaching on a double.

Newberry starter Cole Robison (Greer, S.C.; 4-4) allowed five runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and four walks. Tusculum's Dylan Hochevar (4-1) earned the win after allowing just one run on three hits in 7.0 innings.

Rufus went 2-for-2 in the game and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) was 2-for-4. Bonner, Matt Henriksen, Coffman and Houser each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Game Two: Tusculum 11, Newberry 5
After plenty of offense from both sides in the first inning, the Tusculum bats were the ones which continued to connect as the Pioneers earned a sweep with an 11-5 win.

Sean Cotten and Alexi Colon each hit sacrifice flies in the top of the first and Coffman had an RBI single to give Tusculum an early 3-0 lead. Newberry responded in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back RBI singles by Darr and Vogel.

Vogel made a great catch and throw home to end the top of the second with a double play, but Tusculum put three runs on the board in the top of the third to hold on to the lead for good. Rufus hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3, but TC scored four runs in the fifth highlighted by a monster homer to right-center from Colon. Tusculum's scoring was capped with Coffman's RBI double in the sixth.

Newberry had its most offensive chances of the weekend, but stranded six runners in scoring position until an offensive run in the seventh. Tusculum helped the late rally with three errors leading to two Wolves runs, but the hosts left the bases loaded to end the game at 11-5.

Darr and Vogel each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Wolves and Newberry starter Chauncey Mattei (Greenville, S.C.; 2-4) was hit with the loss after allowing six runs - only two earned - on seven hits in 2.2 innings.

Coffman was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Arias was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jason Gardner (2-1) went 4.0 innings and allowed three hits on six hits to earn the win on the mound for the Pioneers.
