Wolves drop series opener to Tusculum
Friday, March 25, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College pitching staff had a hard time finding the strike zone Friday night and the offense struggled as well, as the visiting Tusculum Pioneers took a 12-2 victory in the first game of the South Atlantic Conference series at the Smith Road Complex.

The Wolves fall to 15-17 overall and 8-8 in SAC play, while the Pioneers are now 21-9 and 9-7 in the league. The two teams are slated to play a doubleheader tomorrow, with the start time pushed ahead to 11 a.m. in an attempt to avoid predicted rainstorms in the area.

Tusculum scored 12 runs on only nine hits, but drew a SAC record 17 walks to keep the offense going. The Pioneers led 1-0 after the first inning on an RBI single by Matt Henriksen, and poured on four runs in the second with an RBI fielder's choice by Lukas Graves, a bases loaded walk drawn by Alexi Colon and a two-run single from Henriksen. By the end of the third inning, it was a 7-0 lead as Payden Houser scored on a dropped fly ball, Nate Reid drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Sean Cotten had an RBI single.

Newberry's only runs of the game came in the bottom of the fourth, as John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) and Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) drove them in with a two-out double pulled down the right field line to make it a 7-2 game.

Colon pushed the lead back to six runs with an RBI single in the fifth, and Newberry threatened again in the sixth after leading off with back-to-back walks, but Tusculum starter Craig Goodman (5-2) would strikeout a pair and induce a fielder's choice to keep the Wolves off of the board. A Colon groundout in the seventh and bases loaded walks by Reid and Cotten in the eighth rounded out the Tusculum scoring.

Newberry starter Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.; 1-1) was hit with the loss, allowing six runs on five hits and five walks in 2.0 innings. Goodman earned the win for Tusculum, allowing just two runs on five hits in seven innings, striking out eight Wolves.

Love went 2-for-3 for Newberry, while Fogarile, Bley and Chris Harper (Lexington, S.C.) also collected hits. Colon and Henriksen each had three RBIs for Tusculum.
