Tuesday, March 22, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The USC Aiken pitching staff held the Newberry College bats silent for most of the night on the way to a 15-0 shutout of the homestanding Wolves at the Smith Road Complex on Tuesday evening.

The Wolves fall to 14-16 overall and will host Limestone at 6 p.m. Wednesday, while the Pacers are now 16-11 on the year and are off until a weekend series at Georgia College.

Newberry managed just four hits in the game, with Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) going 2-for-2 with a double. Chris Harper (Lexington, S.C.) and Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) each collected singles.

The Pacers only scored in three innings, but were able to put up multiple runs in each. Kyle Rice, JJ Loker, Tyler Bourdo and Josh Attaway each drove in runs in the first inning to stake USCA out to an early 4-0 lead. The Pacers scored three innings with two out in the fourth to get out to a 7-0 advantage and piled on eight runs in the fifth and kept Newberry off of the scoreboard to sweep the season series.

Chris Phillips (North Augusta, S.C.; 0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs - five earned - on eight hits and two walks in 3.2 innings of work. USCA starter Jason Cochcroft (3-1) allowed three hits in 5.0 innings to earn the win, while Ryan Milewski, Taylor Peed, Joe Tart and Jake Padgett each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to hold on to the shutout.
