Wolves earn series win after Saturday DH split with Wingate
Saturday, March 19, 2011

WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves baseball squad held off a late charge from Wingate University's Bulldogs to earn a 6-4 win in the first game of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Ron Christopher Field. Wingate was able to walk off with a 7-6 win in the 10th inning of the second game of the doubleheader.

Newberry (14-15 overall, 8-7 SAC) returns to the Smith Road Complex for a five-game homestand next week, starting with a 6 p.m. Tuesday game against USC Aiken. Wingate moves to 20-13 overall and 9-6 in league play.

Game One: Newberry 6, Wingate 4
The Wolves followed a strong pitching performance from Cole Robison (Greer, S.C.; 4-3) and held off a ninth inning rally by the Bulldogs to earn a 6-4 win and clich a series win.

Robison earned the win after allowing just one run on seven hits in 7.2 innings of work, striking out three.

Neither team could generate offense early, as Newberry opened the scoring in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI single from Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.). Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) scored an unearned run in the seventh followed by Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) in the eighth to push the Wolves' lead to 3-0.

Wingate's Dodson McPherson rapped an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to give Wingate its first run.

The Wolves plated three runs in the top of the ninth when Bley scored on a wild pitch, Chris Harper (Lexington, S.C.) laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt and Love smoked an RBI double to push Newberry out to a 6-1 lead.

A pari of Newberry errors helped Wingate score three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Kyle Christian (Charleston, S.C.) came in with two outs and the winning runs on base and needed just two pitches to induce a flyout and earn his second save of the season.

Love went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the game, while Darr was 2-for-5 and Bley scored twice.

Game Two: Wingate 7, Newberry 6 (10 innings)
The Wolves and Bulldogs battled back and forth in the early innings and kept each other off the scoreboard late until a walkoff single by Casey Allison in the 10th inning gave Wingate a 7-6 win in the game scheduled to go seven innings.

Love gave Newberry a 1-0 lead in the first with a sacrifice fly, and Wingate's Dodson McPherson tied the game up in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single after a leadoff triple by Cale Rogers.

Bley put Newberry back in the lead in the bottom of the second as he and Terrance Gray (Newberry, S.C.) executed a double steal from first and third. Wingate answered again with an RBI single by Rogers in the second inning.

In the fourth inning, the Wolves played small ball and took advantage of Wingate errors to plate four runs. Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) led off with a single and Keke Wadsworth (Pomaria, S.C.) reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Bley reached on a bunt single and Rufus put Newberry ahead with an RBI single. Harper reached on an error by the WU second baseman, which allowed three Wolves to score, giving Newberry a 6-2 lead.

McPherson tied the game up with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the inning, as he launced a grand slam homerun down the right field line to tie the game at 6-all.

Neither team could cross the plate in the fifth or sixth, and Rufus saved the game for the Wolves in the bottom of the seventh, nailing the baserunner at the plate from centerfield to send the game to extra innings.

The Wolves missed out on chances to win the game in extra innings, as they left the bases loaded in the ninth and left two runners on base in the 10th. Wingate got to Newberry reliever D.J. Hearsey (Oviedo, Fla.; 0-1) for the first time in an extended relief session with two singles in the 10th, and Allison's single gave Wingate the win.'

Despite the loss, Hearsey had one of the strongest appearances of his career, pitching 5.1 innings of relief and allowing just the walkoff run on five hits. Wingate's Greyson Davis allowed all six Newberry runs on four hits in 4.0 innings, but three Bulldog relievers combined to allow just one more hit in six innings.
