Wolves earn 4-3 win in ninth inning of series opener at Wingate
Friday, March 18, 2011

WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College Wolves baseball team used homeruns from Chris Love and Kevin Rufus to take an early lead on the Wingate University Bulldogs and a ninth-inning RBI single by Patrick Regalado gave the Wolves a 4-3 win in the opener of a South Atlantic Conference series at Ron Christopher Stadium.

Newberry (13-14 overall, 7-6 SAC) used strong pitching performances from starter Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.) and reliever Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) and the big hits from Rufus (Andrews, S.C.), Love (Columbia, S.C.) and Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.) to snap a six-game losing streak.

Brown earned no decision after 7.2 innings of work, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking two. He carried a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning but allowed Taylor Honeycutt to tie the game for Wingate (19-12 overall, 8-5 SAC) with a two-run homer. A two-out single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases, but Sturkie (2-0) came in and struck out the first batter he saw to extinguish the rally.

The Wolves took the lead in the top of the first on a two-run opposite field homerun by Love. Wingate's Brian Yeung hit a solo homer in the second but Rufus answered for Newberry with a solo homer with one out in the third to stake Newberry to the 3-1 lead.

Following the Rufus homer, Wingate starter Chris Nelson buckled down and allowed only two more hits and two walks. He went 8.0 innings and allowed the three runs on six hits and striking out nine. Drew Boyer (1-1) came into the game for the Bulldogs with the game tied in the ninth. After pinch hitter Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) drew a one-out walk, he advanced to third on two wild pitches by Boyer and came home on Regalado's RBI single.

Sturkie allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but struck Honeycutt out to end the game and give Newberry the win. Sturkie earned the pitching win with 1.1 innings of relief, striking out two and allowing the single.

Rufus was the only Newberry player with multiple hits, while four Wolves recorded stolen bases. Wingate's Chris Vazquez and Cody Shelton each went 3-for-4 in the game, but only two other Bulldogs earned hits.

The two teams will face off again Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
