Newberry falls to No. 15 Lander, 6-2
Wednesday, March 16, 2011

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves baseball squad had a hard time generating offense in a 6-2 loss at 15th-ranked Lander University on Wednesday evening at Legion Field.

Newberry (12-14) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but the Bearcats (15-9) plated five unanswered runs to split the season series. The Wolves took two of three games from Lander at the Smith Road Complex in the first week of the season.

Lander opened the scoring in the second inning with runners on first and third. Jeff May scored on the play, while Joe Tebaldi evaded the tag on the pickoff until his teammate could cross the plate.

Newberry responded in the third inning, as Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) led off with a single and scored on an RBI double by freshman Chris Harper (Lexington, S.C.), who was seeing his first varsity action. Harper gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead later in the inning when he scored on a passed ball.

The Bearcats tied the game in the third on an RBI groundout by Erik Lunde and took the lead for good on a two-run homerun by Jordan Owens in the fourth. The hosts tacked on a run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by AJ Nunziato and an RBI double by May in the sixth. Lander threatened to add to the lead in the eighth, loading the bases with no outs before D.J. Hearsay (Oviedo, Fla.) came into the game and got three straight outs to get the Wolves out of the jam.

Newberry starter Chris Phillips (North Augusta, S.C.; 0-1) gave up four earned runs in 4.0 innings on three hits, two strikeouts and four walks in his first collegiate start. Six Bearcat pitchers combined for the win with Darrin Tew (1-1) earning the win in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. The Lander staff struck out 12 Wolves in the game, led by Tew's four punchouts.

Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) was the only Newberry player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 in the game, while Harper had Newberry's only extra-base hit of the game.

The Wolves will look to snap their current losing skid as they resume South Atlantic Conference play on Friday at Wingate University. The series starts with a 6 p.m. game Friday followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
