Wolves come back late but fall to Coker, 7-6
Tuesday, March 15, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves baseball team came back to tie up Tuesday's game with the Coker College Cobras in the eighth inning, but the guests' Nick Fuoco hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth to give Coker a 7-6 win.

Newberry (12-13) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) and a sacrifice fly by Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.). The inning was started with back-to-back bunt singles by Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) and John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.).

The Wolves held on to the lead until the fifth inning when the Cobras (10-16) put up six runs in the fifth. An RBI double by Fico Kondla gave Coker its first run and Rob Quattrock scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Nick Ammons' RBI single gave the visitors the lead and RBI singles from Fuoco and Tyler Witzel and a run on a first-and-third play to end the inning gave Coker a 6-2 lead.

Newberry loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth when Fogarile was plated on a double play ball and the Wolves tied the game at 6-all in the bottom of the eighth with three runs on an RBI single by Keke Wadsworth (Pomaria, S.C.), when Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) reached on an error and an RBI single by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.).

However, the Cobras were able to convert a ninth inning error into the game-winning run on Fuoco's two-out single to give the visitors the win.

Newberry starter Alex Brown (Columbia, S.C.) allowed five runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, but Matt Mege (Levittown, N.Y.; 2-3) was tagged with the loss when his unearned runner scored in the ninth. Coker's Russ White (1-0) earned the decision despite allowing the game-tying runs in the eighth, while Matt Bowman (1) earned the save after pitching a scoreless ninth.

Rohena was Newberry's only player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with the first inning RBI, while Fogarile scored twice and Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.) had the Wolves' only extra base hit and threw out two runners on the basepaths.

The Wolves return to action Wednesday evening at Lander. First pitch at Legion Field in Greenwood is set for 6 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Newberry, but was switched to Lander's home field following a series of rainouts in the opening series of the season.
