Friday, March 11, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves had a hard time generating any offense Friday night as Catawba College came away with a 5-0 South Atlantic Conference win at the Smith Road Complex.

Newberry falls to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in SAC play, while Catawba moves to 17-5 and 9-1 in league play. The two teams will close out the weekend series with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

The Wolves fell behind in the second inning on a solo homerun by Garrett Furr and the Catawba Indians pushed out to a 3-0 lead with RBI singles from Chris Dula and Josh Hohn in the fourth inning. Austin Moyer's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning made it 4-0 and the guests capped the scoring with an RBI sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning by Julio Zubillaga.

Despite the loss, the Newberry pitching staff did a good job working out of trouble spots. The Catawba Indians earned 13 hits in the game, with only two going for extra bases. Newberry pitchers allowed only four walks and stranded 14 baserunners.

However, the highlight on the mound was SAC Pitcher of the Week Nick Lomascolo (4-1) for Catawba. He allowed no runs in 7.2 innings of work, striking out nine and walking four. H in the e came out of the game with runners on second and third in the seventh inning, but the Wolves couldn't capitalize on the situation.

Kevin Rufus (Andrew, S.C.) went 2-for-4 in the game and was the only Newberry player with multiple hits. Caleb Brazell (Blythewood, S.C.) and Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) also earned hits for the Wolves. Clayton Wagner (Ocala, Fla.; 0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs - two earned - on eight hits in 4.0 innings, striking out three. Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.) struck out five batters and allowed one unearned run in 3.2 innings of relief.
