Newberry splits slugfests with Mars Hill
Saturday, March 5, 2011

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College Wolves won the first game of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with the Mars Hill Lions, 18-6, but came out on the wrong end of an 11-9 decision in the nightcap at MHC's Henderson Field.

With the split, the Wolves are now 12-9 overall and 6-3 in SAC play. Their next action comes at Augusta State on Wednesday, March 9, before hosting SAC leaders Catawba for a three-game series next Friday and Saturday.

Game One: Newberry 18, Mars Hill 6
The Wolves pounded out 14 hits and capitalized on 12 Mars Hill walks to earn an 18-6 win in the first game of the day. Newberry scored the first 12 runs of the game before MHC finally crossed the plate in the seventh inning.

Newberry started the scoring in the second inning with five runs. Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) started the rally with a double down the left field line and came home on a Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) single. Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) pushed Newberry's lead to 3-0 with a homerun in his next at bat. Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.) and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) made it a 5-0 game by the end of the inning with RBIs.

Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) made it a 6-0 game in the third with an RBI double. In fourth, Newberry continued to pull away in the fourth when a two-run single by Caleb Brazell (Blythewood, S.C.) and RBI singles by Love and Morgan made it a 10-0 advantage. Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) drew a bases loaded walk and Love drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give Newberry a 12-0 lead.

Newberry starter Cole Robison (Greer, S.C.; 3-2) kept Newberry's lead safe, scattering seven hits through his 7.0 innings of work, allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks. Mars Hill's first three runs came in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Matt Harris and a two-run single from Ben Hunt.

The Wolves responded in the eighth with a two-run homer from Gartman and a bases loaded walk by Love, and tacked on another three runs with RBIs from Calahan Kirkhart (Sumter, S.C.) and Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.).

The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was far too little way too late as the Wolves earned the win after 2.0 innings of relief from D.J. Hearsey (Oviedo, Fla.).

Love, Darr, Brazell, Rufus, Morgan and Gartman each had two hits in the game, as the Wolves earned six extra base hits. Morgan and Love each drove in three runs.
