Newberry drops series opener at Mars Hill, 6-5
Friday, March 4, 2011

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College Wolves came back from a deficit to tie Friday's South Atlantic Conference game with Mars Hill College in the eighth inning and were two outs away from another extra inning game before Mars Hill's Adam Lewis hit a walk-off double to give the Lions a 6-5 win in the series opener at Henderson Field.

Newberry (11-8 overall, 5-2 SAC) was led by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.), who hit his first homerun of the season and tied the game in the eighth with a sacrifice fly. Mars Hill (9-11 overall, 3-4 SAC) had leadoff hitter Michael Bueker go 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

The two teams are slated to close out the series with a doubleheader at noon Saturday at Henderson Field, provided the incoming weather holds off.

The Lions started the scoring in the bottom of the first after Bueker led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on an errant throw. A sacrifice fly from Tyler Reboulet made it a 1-0 lead. Newberry's Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) led off the second inning with a single and tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.). Mars Hill's Michael Brittian gave the hosts a 2-1 lead when he led the bottom of the second off with a solo homer, but Vogel responded in kind with a homerun of his own to lead off the top of the third and tie the game at 2-2.

A pair of wild pitches from Newberry starter Clayton Wagner (Ocala, Fla.) helped Reboulet score in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2, and the Lions extended the lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning on a Matt Harris solo homer to left center.

The first three Newberry batters of the fifth inning reached on errors and the Wolves capitalized with an RBI double by Love and a sacrifice fly by Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) to tie the game at 4-4.

The Wolves kept the Lions off of the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth inning and loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but could not capitalize. Mars Hill's Ben Hunt put the Lions back in the lead with a two-run RBI single in the sixth. The Lions left the bases loaded in the inning.

Neither squad scored in the seventh inning, but Newberry tied the game in the eighth. Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) led off the inning with a single and moved to third after a steal, setting up the sacrifice fly by Vogel to tie the game once again, this time at 5-all.

The Lions were set down in order in the eighth, but so were the Wolves in the ninth. Bueker led off the bottom of the ninth with a single for the Lions and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored the winning run on Lewis' double, giving the Lions the first game of the series.

Love and Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) each went 2-for-5 in the game and were the only Wolves with more than one hit. Matt Mege (Levittown, N.Y.; 2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing the walkoff run.
