Wolves hold on for 6-5 win over Augusta State
Tuesday, March 1, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves exploded for six first run innings and held off a charge from the Augusta State Jaguars to earn a 6-5 victory at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday evening.

Newberry (11-7) will travel to the mountains of North Carolina for a South Atlantic Conference series against Mars Hill this Friday and Saturday, while Augusta State (7-10) hosts Columbus State for a Peach Belt series at the Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

The Wolves lit up Augusta State starter Kevin Dodson (1-2) for six runs in only a third of an inning to get out to the early lead. Evan Darr and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) each drove in runs before Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) blasted a three-run homerun over the right field fence. John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) would make it a 6-0 lead when he scampered home on a throwing error after Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) ripped a double down the left field line.

Newberry starter Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.) lasted three innings, allowing three Jaguar runs in the third. He gave way to Chauncey Mattei (Greenville, S.C.; 2-1), who pitched three scoreless innings. The Jaguars narrowed the deficit to 6-4 in the seventh when Caleb Saggus reached on a bunt single, stole second and third and scored on an RBI single from Curtis Parker.

After Kyle Christian (Charleston, S.C.) worked a scoreless eighth inning, Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.; 3) came in and worked around some trouble spots in the ninth to earn his third save in four games. Tristan Toorie drove in a run with an RBI fielders' choice with two outs, and Jeff Rice ripped a ball to right field, but Gartman made a diving catch to seal the win for the Wolves.

Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.), Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) and Bley each recorded two hits for Newberry, while ASU's Saggus went 3-for-5 with four stolen bases.
