Saturday, February 26, 2011

BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves lost the first game to Brevard in Saturday's doubleheader at Gil Coan Field, 9-4, but earned a series with a 3-1 victory in the second game of the day.

The Wolves now stand at 10-7 overall and 5-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Newberry hosts Augusta State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in non-conference action before resuming SAC play with a series at Mars Hill next weekend.

Game One: Brevard 9, Newberry 4
Newberry took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) drove in Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) with a two-out RBI single, but the Tornados took a 2-1 lead in the second on a two-run homer by Randy O'Dell.

Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) tied the game with an RBI double with two out in the top of the fifth, but another two-run homer by Brevard, this one from Ron Patterson gave the Tornados a 4-2 edge after five innings.

RBI singles by Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) and Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) in the top of the sixth tied the game at 4-all for the Wolves, but BC would score five unanswered runs to earn the win.

Rufus, Darr, Morgan and Goodwin collected two hits apiece for the Wolves. Cole Robison (Greer, S.C.; 2-2) took the loss for the Wolves, allowing six runs - five earned - on nine hits in 6.0 innings with four strikeouts.

Game Two: Newberry 3, Brevard 1
A solo homerun by Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) gave Newberry an early lead and the Wolves used a strong pitching effort from a group of younger players to earn the series win.

Love's homer to lead off the second inning gave Newberry a 1-0 lead and an RBI double by Darr in the top of the fourth pushed the lead to two runs. An O'Dell RBI double in the bottom of the fourth cut the lead to 2-1, but a pinch hit RBI single from Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) gave Newberry the insurance run it was looking for.

Starter Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.; 1-0) earned his first win of the season, going 5.0 innings and allowing the one run on two hits, striking out five and walking four. Kyle Christian (Charleston, S.C.) was excellent in relief, allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings and Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.; 2 saves) struck out the only batter he saw on three pitches to earn the save.
