Newberry earns 7-6 extra inning win at Brevard
Friday, February 25, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves baseball squad used two RBIs apiece from Andy Vogel, Evan Darr and Chris Love to pick up a 7-6 win in 10 innings at Brevard College on Friday afternoon.

Newberry (9-6 overall, 4-0 South Atlantic Conference) has now won its first four league games for just the second time since joining the league in 1997. Dating back to last season's sweep of Brevard, the Wolves now have a seven-game conference winning streak, which is the program's longest. Brevard falls to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in SAC play. The two teams will meet for a doubleheader at BC's Gil Coan Field at noon Saturday.

The Wolves were not in a comfortable position for most of the game, but the 2-3-4 batters helped pull through for the win. Brevard took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo homerun by Zach Merriken.

Newberry took the lead for the first time in the top of the third inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) and Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) and a run-scoring single by Love (Columbia, S.C.), all of which came with two outs.

Brevard regained the lead in the bottom of the third with five runs. An RBI single by Randy O'Dell was followed by a two-run double by Kramer Clark, an RBI double from Ethan Pressley and an RBI single by Derek Ham gave the Tornados a 6-3 lead.

However, Newberry starter Clayton Wagner (Ocala, Fla.) and relievers Matt Mege (Levittown, N.Y.; 2-1) and Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.; 2 saves) kept the Tornados off of the scoreboard for the rest of the game to give the Wolves a shot at the win.

Darr and Love drove in a run apiece in the top of the fifth and Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) hit an RBI single in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 6-all.

Newberry had a chance to earn the win in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but could not convert. The Wolves earned the victory in the top of the 10th after Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a fielding error. After advancing to third, Goodwin scored the game winning run on a two-out RBI single by Vogel.

Brevard led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but Sturkie came into the game and forced two popups and a strikeout to earn the save and give Newberry the win.

Wagner earned no decision after allowing six runs - five earned - in 6.0 innings on 11 hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Mege earned the win with 3.0 scoreless innings on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Sturkie earned the save with the scoreless 10th inning.

Vogel was Newberry's offensive leader with three hits, two RBIs and a run, while Rufus, Darr, Love and Goodwin each earned two hits.
