Wolves downed by No. 15 Erskine, 6-2
Wednesday, February 23, 2011

DUE WEST, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves held the undefeated and 15th-ranked Erskine Flying Fleet to a tie until the bottom of the sixth inning, when back-to-back homeruns by the Flying Fleet put the hosts ahead on the way to a 6-2 win at Grier Field on Wednesday.

Newberry (8-6) saw a four-game winning streak snapped despite two RBIs from Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.), while the Flying Fleet moves to 11-0 on the season. Newberry's next action comes in a three-game South Atlantic Conference series at Brevard. The first game at Gil Coan Field in Brevard is set for 2 p.m. Friday.

The Wolves' defense turned double plays in the first and second innings to keep the Fleet from crossing home, and the offense gave Newberry a lead in the fourth. Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Love's two out single drove him home and gave the Wolves the 1-0 advantage. Erskine took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two run homerun by John Bolding.

Newberry tied the game up in the sixth when Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) doubled and scored on a two-out RBI double by Love. However, the Fleet took the lead for good in the bottom half, leading the frame off with back-to-back homers by Casey Winckowski and Brian Laznik. The Fleet tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth on an RBI triple from Zach Smith and an RBI sacrifice bunt by Zach McCarthy.

Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.; 1-2) took the loss for the Wolves, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings, including the Fleet's homeruns. Love was the only Newberry player to record multiple hits in the game.
