HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Newberry College's Evan Darr drove in four runs and starting pitcher Chauncey Mattei threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Wolves to a 10-4 victory over the Coker Cobras at Tom J. New Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Newberry (8-5 overall) broke open a scoreless tie in the fifth inning and brought home a run in every inning thereafter to earn the midweek victory. The Wolves stay on the road to take on undefeated and nationally ranked Erskine on Wednesday in an attempt to avenge a 13-7 loss to the Flying Fleet earlier this month.

Mattei (Greenville, S.C.; 1-1) held the Cobras off of the scoreboard until the Wolves' bats got going. The senior threw seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out four and walking three.

The Wolves started the scoring in the fifth on a two-out, three-run double by Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) and tacked on another run in the sixth on an RBI double by Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.). Another RBI single from Darr in the seventh and a run-scoring single by Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) made it 6-0 at the seventh inning stretch.

Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) smoked an RBI double in the top of the eighth to extend the Wolves' lead to 7-0, but Coker narrowed the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Newberry extended its advantage back to seven runs with three runs in the ninth thanks to a two-run single by Cox. The Cobras earned a run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly, but another runner was doubled off to extinguish any hopes at a comeback.

Cox was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Darr was 2-for-5 with four RBIs. Rohena, Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) and Goodwin also recorded two hits apiece.
