Wolves win walkoff thriller over Carson-Newman in SAC opener, 3-2

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 3-2 win over Carson-Newman in 11 innings at the Smith Road Complex on Friday evening. Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) drove in two runs to lead the Wolves to victory.

Newberry (5-5 overall, 1-0 SAC) and Carson-Newman (3-8, 0-1 SAC) each followed strong performances from their starting pitchers and several outstanding defensive plays in the outfield. Newberry's Clayton Wagner (Ocala, Fla.) allowed two earned runs on six hits in eight innings pitched, while Carson-Newman's Alex Britt went 7.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

The Eagles started the scoring in the top of the second on an RBI single by Aaron Vargas, but his hit was the last the Eagles would get until the eighth inning. Newberry tied the game in the fifth on a Cox RBI groundout after a triple by Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.). The Wolves took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) led off with a double and scored on a Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) sacrifice fly.

Carson-Newman tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single by Kyle Koeneman. Newberry put runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't convert on the opportunity.

Newberry reliever Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.; 1-0) allowed only two hits in three innings of relief and struck out three to help give Newberry a chance to earn the victory in the extra innings. Love led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) was intentionally walked and Rufus was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cox grounded the ball to the second baseman and beat the throw on the potential double play ball to give the Wolves the win.

Carson-Newman's Wesley Dozier went 3-for-5 and was the only Eagle with multiple hits. No Newberry player had more than one hit, but the Wolves played error-free baseball.

The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.
