Wolves drop 12-5 decision at No. 27 USC Aiken
Wednesday, February 16, 2011 | by Cox hits homer; Love goes 3-for-4

AIKEN, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the offense was nowhere to be found in the middle innings of a 12-5 loss at No. 27 USC Aiken on Wednesday afternoon.

Newberry (4-5) was led offensively by Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.), who was 3-for-4 at the plate with a first inning RBI. Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) hit his first homerun of the season in the top of the ninth.

USC Aiken (5-2) was paced by the 4-for-5 performance of Spencer Wolfe, who drove in three runs and scored twice including a two-run homer in the eighth.

Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) led off the game with a bunt single and stole second. He gave Newberry a 1-0 lead when he scored on Love's RBI single. The Pacers tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Stephen Bellantoni reached home after a wild pitch by Newberry starter Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.; 1-1).

USC Aiken took the lead in the third on an RBI single by Wolfe and made it 3-1 on an RBI double by Josh Miller in the fourth. The Pacers blew the game open with three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh, making it a 8-1 lead for the hosts before the Wolves found the scoreboard again.

A two-out rally in the eighth was started by a Gray walk and a single by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.). Gray scored on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Caleb Brazell (Blythewood, S.C.) cut the lead to 8-3, but USC Aiken once again pulled away with four runs in the bottom of the inning, with two coming on the homer by Wolfe.

Newberry put two runs on the board in the ninth after a one-out walk by Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Cox's homer, but the next two batters were put out in succession to give USCA the win.

The Wolves come back to the Smith Road Complex on Friday to start South Atlantic Conference play against the Carson-Newman Eagles. Friday's game is set to start at 6 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
