Wolves split Saturday twinbill with North Greenville
Saturday, February 12, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader and took a heartbreaking loss to North Greenville in a marathon second game at the Smith Road Complex.

With the split, Newberry is now 4-4 on the season, while North Greenville is 4-2. The Wolves hit the road on Wednesday for a single game at nationally-ranked USC Aiken before beginning South Atlantic Conference play against Carson-Newman on Friday and Saturday.

Game One: Newberry 9, North Greenville 3
Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) moved to 2-0 on the season and allowed no earned runs for the second consecutive start in a win for Newberry in Saturday's first game.

Newberry started the scoring in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) and another run scored when Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) reached on an error. North Greenville tied the game with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third, but the Wolves took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) and a two-run single by Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.).

Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) extended Newberry's lead to 6-2 in the fourth with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) in the sixth made it 7-2.

North Greenville scored on an error in the top of the eighth, but Newberry wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Goodwin and Vogel.

McElwee went seven innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits, striking out five. Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) allowed one unearned run on one hit and two strikeouts in two innings. Vogel was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Darr and Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) each recorded two hits

Game Two: North Greenville 4, Newberry 3 (14 innings)
The Wolves once again did not allow an earned run, but Newberry could not convert 11 hits and 11 NGU walks into enough runs to earn a win in a game which went twice its scheduled length.

North Greenville started the scoring with three unearned runs in the top of the second, but could not find the scoreboard again until the top of the 14th.

Newberry had runners in scoring position in the first three innings thanks to Crusader walks, but didn't earn a hit until the fourth. The hit by Morgan would also start the scoring for Newberry as Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.) and Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) hit RBI singles to cut the NGU lead to 3-2.

Regalado would tie the game up for Newberry in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double. Newberry put runners on second and third with no outs in the seventh but couldn't convert, sending the game into extra innings.

Both teams were kept off of the board in the extra frames, but it was Newberry errors which gave the Crusaders the series win. A failed pickoff attempt put a runner on third with one out and a passed ball allowed the winning run to score.

Starter Chauncey Mattei (Greenville, S.C.) allowed three unearned runs on six hits in seven innings, but earned no decision. Kyle Christian (Charleston, S.C.) allowed no runs in three relief innings and Matt Mege (Levittown, N.Y.) was hit with the loss after four innings of relief.

Vogel, Darr, Morgan and Regalado each had two hits in the game
