Gartman's homer not enough as Wolves drop road game at North Greenville
Friday, February 11, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College senior Sanchez Gartman hit a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning, but the Wolves were unable to score any more runs in an 11-1 loss at North Greenville on Friday afternoon.

Newberry falls to 3-3 overall, while North Greenville is now 3-1. The two sides will face off in a doubleheader at Newberry's Smith Road Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The game started out as a pitcher's duel between SAC Pitcher of the Week Cole Robison (Greer, S.C.) and NGU's Drew Provence, but the Crusaders drew first blood in the bottom of the third. Tyler Callicutt hit an RBI single followed by a two-run double by Andrew Lawrence.

Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) made it a 3-1 game in the top of the fifth on his second homerun of the season. The Crusaders' Anthony Foulk hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning and Callicutt blasted a grand slam to knock Robison from the game and give NGU an 8-1 lead after five. The Crusaders would put up two runs in the sixth and a run in the eight, while Provence and Lawrence kept Newberry off of the board, allowing just two runners to reach scoring position after Gartman's bomb.

Gartman was 2-for-4 in the game, while Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.), Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.), Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.), John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) and Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) all collected singles.
