Wolves fall late to No. 18 Erskine, 13-7
Wednesday, February 9, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves took a lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Erskine Flying Fleet scored eight runs in the top of the ninth to escape the Smith Road Complex with a 13-7 win Wednesday afternoon.

Newberry (3-2) trailed by two entering the seventh inning, but a leadoff triple from Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) started the Wolves' rally. John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) and Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. Pinch hitter Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) drew a walk to drive in a run and a base hit through the right side by Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) tied the game at 5-all. Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) reached on an error to plate Goodwin and a sacrifice fly by Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) would wrap up Newberry's scoring in the inning.

The Wolves had an early 1-0 lead after the first inning when Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) was plated after leading the game off with a single.

Erskine (3-0) was ranked 18th nationally entering the game and took a 2-1 lead on a two-out, two-run homerun by Casey Winckowski (Oregon, Ohio) in the top of the third. Will Huff (Sugarhill, Ga.) made it a 3-1 game with a solo homer to right-center in the fifth.

Newberry narrowed the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Gray. The Wolves tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the sixth when Gartman scored after Scaggs reached on an error.

The Flying Fleet took the lead again in the top of the seventh on a two-run pinch hit single by Luke Danielewicz (Spartanburg, S.C.), but Newberry wrested the lead back in the bottom of the inning on the rally spearheaded by Rufus' triple.

Newberry went into the ninth inning with momentum, but the Wolves struggled to find the strike zone. The first three Erskine batters drew four pitch walks to quickly load the bases with no outs. A walk and a hit batsman tied the game for the Fleet without having to swing the bat. RBI singles by Winckowski and Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, S.C.), a bases clearing double by John Bolding (Pickens, S.C.) and a two-run single by Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, S.C.) put the Fleet ahead for good.

Newberry starter Clayton Wagner (Ocala, Fla.) earned no decision in his first collegiate start, allowing five runs - only two earned - on five hits in 6-2/3 innings of work. Wade Ruff (Rock Hill, S.C.; 0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing the winning run to reach base.

The Wolves will play North Greenville in a three-game series this weekend. Newberry will play in Tigerville at 2 p.m. Friday before returning home to host the Crusaders for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
