Wolves take down Francis Marion, 6-1
Tuesday, February 8, 2011

FLORENCE, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves took advantage of Francis Marion errors and scored four early runs on the way to a 6-1 victory at Cormell Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Newberry (3-1) was led offensively by Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.), who went 2-for-4 with a walk, two steals and three RBIs. Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.; 1-0) went 6-1/3 innings in his starting role and allowed no runs, scattering six hits and striking out four.

Francis Marion (1-2) did not score until putting an unearned run on the board with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Michael Wilson (Florence, S.C.) went 3-for-4, while Sam Pepper (Tabernacle, N.J.) had the RBI double in the ninth.

Newberry hosts No. 18 Erskine tomorrow at 3 p.m., while Francis Marion starts a five-game roadtrip at Pfeiffer on Saturday.

Gray's aggressive baserunning gave the Wolves their first run in the top of the first. After drawing a leadoff walk, Gray stole second and third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

In the second, Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a double by Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.). Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly. Scaggs would later score when the FMU right fielder couldn't handle a single hit by Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.). Gray's RBI single wrapped up the scoring in the inning for Newberry, with the Wolves leading 4-0.

The Patriots had a runner on base in every inning of the game, but the pitching of Rojas and Wade Ruff (Rock Hill, S.C.) didn't allow FMU to score in the early going. Newberry extended the lead into more comfortable territory in the top of the sixth. Scaggs led off by reaching on an error and John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) walked. After a Goodwin groundout put both runners in scoring position, Gray's two-out, two-run single gave Newberry a 6-0 lead.

FMU finally scored an unearned run in the ninth, but Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) forced the last two FMU batters to fly out and strike out swinging to give the Wolves the 6-1 win. Newberry has now made it through three out of its first four games without allowing an earned run.
