ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry College's Cole Robison has been named the South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the season's first week of action, the league office announced today.
Robison, a freshman from Greer, S.C., made an impressive collegiate debut in the Wolves' 6-0 win over Lander in the second half of a Saturday doubleheader. Robison went 8.0 innings in his first start, allowing just four baserunners to pick up his first collegiate win. He gave up two hits and issued one walk. Only one Bearcat reached scoring position as the freshman needed only 85 pitches to put Newberry in position to win. Robison was under pressure for the entire game, as the Newberry offense did not put a run on the board until the bottom of the eighth inning.
Tusculum's Matt Henriksen, a sophomore third baseman from Hingham, Mass., was named the SAC Player of the Week. He batted 4-for-9 (.444) with three home runs and seven RBI to lead Tusculum to a pair of wins in Salisbury, N.C. Henriksen homered twice in a 20-11 win over Pfeiffer and once in TC's 7-3 victory at No. 23 Catawba in a non-conference contest. He posted a 3-for-5 performance against Pfeiffer as the Pioneers rallied from an 8-2 deficit, plating eight runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run homer and a two-run double by Henriksen in the frame. He finished the game with five RBI. In the win at Catawba, he hit another two-run blast to up his slugging percentage to 1.556 on the weekend.
Newberry is in action this afternoon at 3 p.m. at Francis Marion and will host No. 18 Erskine on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Wolves visit North Greenville on Friday afternoon before hosting the Crusaders in a Saturday doubleheader.
