Wolves fall to Bearcats in series finale, 12-5
Sunday, February 6, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves fell behind early and weren't able to mount a comeback in a 12-5 loss to the Lander Bearcats at the Smith Road Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Newberry (2-1) was led offensively by Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) who led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer to right field and went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Lander (2-2) put up three runs in the top of the first and never looked back. A.J. Nunziato (South Setuaket, N.Y.), Adam Davey (Topeka, Kan.) and Alan Abreu (Miami, Fla.) each drove in two runs, while Robert Skinner (Hartsville, S.C.) scored three runs.

The first three batters of the game reached base for Lander, which took a 2-0 lead on Nunziato's double. He would be driven home on Davey's double to give the guests an early 3-0 lead.

Gartman launched a no-doubt homerun down the right field line to lead off the second and narrow the deficit to 3-1.

Lander's Patrick Grady (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and Abreu each drove in unearned runs in the third to make it 5-1, but Newberry answered back with a pair of run in the bottom of the inning on Gartman's two-run single.

The Bearcats scored three more runs in the top of the fourth and Newberry responded with an RBI double from Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) and a RBI sacrifice squeeze by Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) to make it an 8-5 game.

Lander scored four runs in the sixth inning and the Bearcats' pitching staff kept Newberry off of the scoreboard for the final five innings to earn the victory.

Lander's Brandon Farquhar (Mossley, Ontario, Canada; 1-0) earned the win with 3-1/3 innings of scoreless relief, while Newberry starter Chauncey Mattei (Greenville, S.C.; 0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs in three innings of work.

The Wolves return to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. game at Francis Marion in Florence. Newberry's next home game will be a 3 p.m. Wednesday game against Erskine.
