Newberry pitchers dominate in Saturday sweep of Lander
Saturday, February 5, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College pitching staff gave first head coach Russell Triplett wins in his first two games as a collegiate head coach with 5-1 and 6-0 victories over the Lander Bearcats at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry (2-0) will close out the weekend series against Lander (1-2) with a 1 p.m. Sunday game at the Smith Road Complex in Newberry. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Greenwood, but poor field conditions forced the move.

The Wolves' pitchers allowed just one unearned run on nine hits in 18 innings of work to start the season.

Game One: Newberry 5, Lander 1
Newberry pitcher Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.; 1-0) returned to action after nearly a year off with nine strikeouts in six innings of work to give the Wolves the win in the season opener.

The Wolves opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) scored on a passed ball with two outs after drawing a leadoff walk.

Newberry extended the lead to 2-0 in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.). The Wolves tacked on another two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by John Fogarile (New York, N.Y). Fogarile would later score on a passed ball.

Lander cut into the lead with a sacrifice fly by Patrick Grady (Pompano Beach, Fla.) to score the Bearcats' only run of the day. Newberry put the final run on the board in the seventh inning afer Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) led off with a double and was brought home by a sacrifice fly from Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.).

Wade Ruff (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) combined for three innings of scoreless relief to wrap up the victory. Chris Thomas (Chester, S.C; 0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Bearcats, allowing four runs - two earned - in 3-1/3 innings with five walks and four strikeouts.

Game Two: Newberry 6, Lander 0
The Wolves broke up a scoreless dual with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give true freshman Cole Robison (Greer, S.C; 1-0) a win after an impressive performance in his first collegiate action.

Robison pitched eight scoreless innings and gave up only two hits and a hit batsman to earn his first college win. He needed only 85 pitches to get Newberry into position to win and allowed only one Bearcat to reach scoring position.

Lander's staff faced some close calls before the Wolves could blow the game open in the eighth. Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.), Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.), Love and Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) all hit singles in an inning which was prolonged by four Bearcat errors. Love hit an RBI single, Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.) drove in a run with a bases loaded hit by pitch and Gray drove in two runs with a single.

D.J. Hearsey (Oviedo, Fla.) closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning to wrap up the doubleheader sweep.

Love went 3-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a run scored, while Vogel was 2-for-3 with a run.
