NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College and head baseball coach Russell Triplett have announced the Wolves' 2011 playing schedule. This season's schedule features 23 games at the Smith Road Complex.
Every single game of the 2011 schedule is a Division II in-region game for the Wolves, as Triplett aims to return Newberry baseball to prominence in his first season as a collegiate head coach.
"We are excited about the 2011 schedule," Triplett said. "It's a great mixture of the top teams in our region as well the majority of the Division II schools from our state. This schedule will challenge our guys every time we take the field."
Of the Wolves' 18 different opponents, six have qualified for the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament in the last two seasons, including four of the six teams from 2010.
The season opens on February 4-6 with a three game series with the Lander Bearcats. The series starts in Greenwood on Friday, February 4, with Newberry's home opener on Saturday, February 5, before a return game at Lander on Sunday, February 6.
Newberry moves on to mid-week games with Francis Marion and Erskine, which both made the 2010 Regional Tournament, before a three-game weekend series with North Greenville. The series starts with a single game in Tigerville on Friday, February 11, before a doubleheader in Newberry on Saturday, February 12. The series will mark the first meetings between the Wolves and the Crusaders since 1996.
After a mid-week road game at USC Aiken, the Wolves open South Atlantic Conference play with a three-game series against Carson-Newman on February 18 and 19. Newberry will then play five straight road games with non-conference matchups at Coker and Erskine before a SAC series at Brevard on February 25 and 26.
The Wolves open March with a mid-week home game against Augusta State on March 1, before taking off for a road SAC series at Mars Hill on March 4 and 5. Newberry then travels to Augusta State on March 9 to close a stretch of nine out of 10 on the road.
Newberry's next extended homestand starts with a three-game SAC series against Catawba on March 11 and 12. Coker and Lander visit for mid-week games on March 15 and 16. Newberry then travels to Wingate for a SAC series on March 18 and 19.
The Wolves host USC Aiken and Limestone on March 22 and 23 before welcoming Tusculum for a SAC series on March 25 and 26.
Newberry takes off on another extended road trip, with eight consecutive games away from Newberry. A March 29 game at Limestone is followed by a SAC series at Lincoln Memorial on April 1 and 2. Newberry then plays at Georgia College on April 6 before the last away SAC series of the season at Lenoir-Rhyne on April 8 and 9.
The Wolves wrap up the regular season with five straight games at the Smith Road Complex. Georgia College and Francis Marion visit on April 12 and 13 before Anderson closes the year with a SAC series on April 15 and 16.
The Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament will be held at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C., on April 20-23 with a bid to the 2011 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament on the line.
