Baseball wraps up season with 11-4 beating of Belmont Abbey
Saturday, May 1, 2010

BELMONT, N.C. - The Newberry College baseball team closed out the 2010 season in style, finishing the year on a five-game winning streak after Saturday's 11-4 win over Belmont Abbey at Abbey Yard.

Newberry wraps up the season with an overall record of 18-30. The scarlet and gray offense came through in clutch situations late to help give senior Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) the win after he allowed four runs in 6-2/3 innings to move to 4-5 on the year.

The scarlet and gray opened the scoring in the second inning. Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) scored on a throwing error and Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.), Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) hit consecutive RBI single to give Newberry the 4-0 lead.

There was no more scoring until the seventh inning, when Horvath came through with a two-out RBI double to plate Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) and extend the lead to 5-0. That fifth run became important in the bottom of the seventh, when the Abbey came through with four runs with two outs. Roberto Sanchez (Vero Beach, Fla.) hit a run-scoring single and he was followed up by a three-run double by Justin Baxley (Marianna, Fla.) to make it 5-4.

Newberry needed insurance in the eighth and got plenty of it, taking advantage of a Belmont Abbey error with two outs. Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) scored on an RBI single with one out. Vogel reached on an error to plate Morin and Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) made the Crusaders pay when he hit a three-run homerun to left field to make it a five-run inning and a 10-4 game.

Gartman extended the lead to 11-4 in the top of the ninth with his team-leading ninth homerun of the season, the most by a Newberry player since moving out of Kirkland Field and the most since the 2004 season. Gary Hersey (Key West, Fla.) closed out his Newberry career by pitching a perfect ninth inning in his 20th appearance of the season.

Every player in the Newberry lineup got at least one hit, led by Horvath and Vogel, who each went 3-for-5. Gray was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and Love went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Rohena and Gartman also went 2-for-5.
