Roman's 13 Ks leads Newberry to 4-1 win over Belmont Abbey

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College junior pitcher Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) struck out 13 batters in 7-2/3 innings to lead the scarlet and gray to a 4-1 victory over Belmont Abbey in non-conference action at the Smith Road Complex on Friday.

Newberry moves to 17-30 on the season, while Belmont Abbey is now 18-26. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Belmont, N.C., to close out the season.

Roman was dominant on the mound throughout the game, and finished his junior year with 101 strikeouts, which is second in school history since Newberry joined the NCAA in 1991-92. Josh McElwee struck out 104 batters in the 2008 season.

Newberry opened the scoring in the third inning when Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) hit a one-out double down the left-field line. Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) plated him with a single through the left side.

The scarlet and gray extended the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) singled, moved to second on a groundout and stole third before Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) brought him home with an RBI single to right. Belmont Abbey's Justin Baxley (Marianna, Fla.) made it a 2-1 game with a leadoff homerun in the sixth.

Newberry clung to the 2-1 until the bottom of the eighth, when Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) and Morin each hit bases loaded RBI singles to provide insurance. BAC would load the bases in the ninth, but Zach Tutak (Palm Coast, Fla.) got the final out to earn his third save of the year.

Roman moved to 4-7 on the year with the win, while Belmont Abbey's Tyler Powell fell to 4-7 with a complete game loss. Morin went 3-for-4, while Love, Rosa and Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) each earned two hits in the win.
