NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team followed a strong pitching performance by starter Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) with plenty of run support as the scarlet and gray took the first game of a South Atlantic Conference series from Brevard College, 11-4, at the Smith Road Complex on Friday night.
With the win, Newberry snaps a 16-game SAC losing streak and moves to 14-30 overall and 2-20 in conference play. The Tornados fall to 8-32 and 2-20 in the league. The two sides will meet again at 2 p.m. tomorrow for a doubleheader. Newberry will celebrate the careers of nine seniors with a ceremony at 1:30 p.m.
Roman was stellar throughout the game, allowing only five hits and striking out 15 batters in the complete game win to move to 3-7 on the season. The game was Roman's fourth outing this season with more than 10 strikeouts. He allowed only one earned run, as three of the BC runs scored after a dropped third strike that should have ended the game at 11-1.
Newberry jumped on Brevard starter Shane Galloway (Rosman, N.C.; 3-4) early, scoring in each of the first three innings. Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) started off the game with back-to-back doubles and Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) hit a two-run homer into the pond beyond the left field fence to make it 3-0 in Newberry's favor before an out was recorded. Rohena added to the scoring with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second.
Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) hit a two-run "pond shot" homer to left in the third and was followed with an RBI single by Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) to make it a 7-0 game. After scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) hit a towering two-run homerun to right field with two outs in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-0.
Roman carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, when Brevard's Ronald Patterson (Gloverville, N.Y.) dropped a soft single into centerfield. The Tornados put their first run on the board in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI single to right field by Derek Ham (Charlotte, N.C.) to make it 9-1. But Newberry came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI triple down the first base line by Vogel and Rohena's run-scoring single to center to make it 11-1.
Roman struck out the first three batters in the top of the ninth, but the third strike was dropped on the third punchout. Brevard rallied with a walk, an RBI single from Ham and a two-run double by Eric Renegar (Stuart, Va.) before Roman induced a fly-out to end the game at 11-4. The junior threw 143 pitches in his third complete game of the season.
Newberry was led offensively by Rohena, who was 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Vogel was 3-for-6 and was just a homerun short of hitting for the cycle. Gray, Vogel, Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) and Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) each had three hits in the game. BC's Galloway gave up nine earned runs on 14 hits in 5-2/3 innings. Ham led BC's offense with two hits, as only four Tornados earned hits in the game.
