Newberry drops 7-1 decision to No. 8 Francis Marion
Wednesday, April 14, 2010

FLORENCE, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team took an early lead over No. 8 Francis Marion, but a string of hits in the fifth and sixth innings gave the Patriots a 7-1 victory at Cormell Field on Wednesday.

Newberry falls to 13-30 overall going into this weekend's South Atlantic Conference series against Brevard. Friday's game starts at 7 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex, with Saturday's doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. FMU is now 33-9 on the year entering a Saturday-Sunday Peach Belt series at UNC Pembroke.

The scarlet and gray put the first run on the board with two outs in the top of the first inning. Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) smashed an RBI double just inside the third base bag to make it a 1-0 game.

Cormell Field gave the Patriots their first run in the bottom of the second, as Trent Knight (Cheraw, S.C.) hit a ball to right field. Just before Newberry right fielder Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) could squeeze the ball, the contact with the wall earned Knight a triple. A sacrifice fly by Tyler Cappelmann (Sumter, S.C.) tied the game at 1-1.

Neither team could scratch across another run until the fifth. FMU stranded two runners on base in each the third and fourth innings on doubles by Cappelmann and Barrett Kleinknecht (Florence, S.C.), but Newberry starter Chauncey Mattei (0-3; Greenville, S.C.) worked his way out of jams in each case.

The Patriots scored in the fifth after Kleinknecht led off with a single and stole second. A sacrifice bunt attempt by Preston Shuey (Charlotte, N.C.) was errantly thrown, allowing Kleinknecht to score. A sacrifice fly by Knight and an RBI single by Logan Bland (Charleston, S.C.) made it a 4-1 game. FMU extended the lead in the sixth with five consecutive singles to score three runs and make it 7-1.

A Newberry runner was picked off of second base to end the top of the seventh inning and the scarlet and gray loaded the bases in the ninth, but NC wasn't able to push across another run.

Love and Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) each went 2-for-4 for Newberry , while Rohena and Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) also earned hits. Mattei gave up four runs - two earned - on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts. Kyle Christian (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three.

Kleinknecht went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Two pinch hitters, Alex Lee (Blythewood, S.C.) and Josh Smith (Pageland, S.C.), each went 2-for-2 with an RBI. FMU starter Jeremiah Meiners (Silver Springs, Md.) moved to 5-1 on the season, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings.
