HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne baseball team jumped out to a big early lead and consistently pulled away from Newberry College in a 16-7 non-conference win at Bears Field on Monday evening.
Newberry falls to 13-29 on the season and will take on No. 8 Francis Marion at Cormell Field in Florence at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Bears are now 19-22 and will host Pfeiffer tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Newberry's Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) hit his sixth homerun of the season in the fifth inning and Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) and Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) each drove in two runs, but the Bears scored six runs in the bottom of the first to stake themselves out to an early lead. A three-run homer by Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, N.C.) helped give L-R the early lead.
The scarlet and gray cut the lead in half in the top of the second, putting three runs on the scoreboard. Two consecutive errors by the L-R third baseman helped the rally, as Morin and Gray each recording RBIs in the inning. Newberry cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the fourth on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Morin. However, the Bears took the lead back out to 8-4 on a two-run homer by Brian Dice (Hickory, N.C.) in the bottom of the inning.
Love's homer in the top of the fifth cut the deficit to 8-5, but back-to-back RBI doubles by Evan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C.) and Dice put the Bears back out to a 10-5 lead. Newberry scored again in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring infield single by Gray to make it 10-6, but Newberry stranded two runners on base in the inning. However, the Bears once again scored twice in the inning to go to a 12-6 advantage.
Newberry scored in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska), but the L-R offensive run continued, as the Bears scored four runs to make it 16-7. Newberry was unable to score in the eighth or ninth, finalizing the game at the nine-run difference.
Gray was 2-for-3 with two steals, while Love, Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) also recorded two hits each. Love, Horvath and Pollack each scored two runs as well. Cory Quackenbush (Oviedo, Fla.; 0-1) was tagged with the loss after rough goings in the first inning. L-R was led offensively by Dice, who went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Taylor and Andrews each recorded three RBIs. Alex Askey (Charlotte, N.C.) moved to 2-0 on the season after allowing five runs in five innings, while Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) picked up his first save of the season after allowing two runs in four innings.
