HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry College baseball team held a three-run lead in the early stages of the game and three Newberry pitchers combined to issue 12 strikeouts, but the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters took a 10-7 victory in the first game of the South Atlantic Conference series at Hennon Field on Friday.
Newberry falls to 13-26 overall and 1-18 in SAC play, while Lincoln Memorial is now 19-20 overall and 9-10 in the league. The two teams will square off again on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Newberry's Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) led off the game with a single and put Newberry's first run on the board on an RBI single with two outs from Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.). The Railsplitters even up the score at 1-all on a two-out RBI double by Ben Adelburg (Madisonville, Fla.) in the bottom of the inning.
Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) and Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) each recorded RBIs in the top of the second to give Newberry a 3-1 lead. Nick Langley (Blaine, Tenn.) led off the bottom of the second with a solo homer to make it 3-2, but Newberry put two runs on the board in the top of the third on RBIs from Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) and Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska), making it 5-2.
In the bottom of the third, LMU loaded the bases with two outs and unfortunately for Newberry, Deaun Williams (Beech Grove, Ind.) cranked a grand slam off of Newberry starter Chauncey Mattei (0-2; Greenville, S.C.) to give the 'Splitters the lead. Chase Quarles (Rogersville, Tenn.) hit an RBI triple later in the inning to give LMU a 7-5 lead. Langley hit a run-scoring single in the fourth, Quarles would homer in the bottom of the fifth and Gelson Perez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) scored to make it a 10-5 game.
Newberry scored on an RBI groundout from Darr in the eighth and a solo homer from Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) with two outs in the ninth, but LMU starter Steven Starbird (Rutledge, Tenn.) was able to snuff any Newberry rally to give LMU the win and give the Railsplitters the win.
Mattei went 2-2/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits, striking out four. Cory Quackenbush (Oviedo, Fla.) was excellent in a long relief appearance, going 3-2/3 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out six batters. Starbird moved to 5-4 on the year with a complete game victory, allowing seven runs - four earned - on nine hits, striking out five.
Pollack and Love each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, with both of Pollack's hits going for doubles. Darr recorded two RBIs and Labrador went 2-for-5. LMU's Williams was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, all of which came on the grand slam. Quarles and Langley each notched two RBIs. The Railsplitters' defense committed four errors, while Newberry was perfect in the field.
