Tuesday, April 6, 2010

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team pounded out 15 hits in Tuesday's game, but could only string them into five runs as the homestanding Coker Cobras earned an 18-5 non-conference win at Tom J. New Field.

With the loss, Newberry falls to 12-25 overall, while Coker sweeps the season series and moves to 23-19 overall. Newberry hosts Division I Gardner-Webb on Wednesday at 6 p.m. It will be the first appearance by a Division I team at the Smith Road Complex.

Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) went 3-for-5 to lead the Newberry offense, while Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico), Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.), Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska), Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) and Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) each rapped out two hits.

Coker's Trey Lynch (Florence, S.C.) and Trevin Taber (Chesnee, S.C.) each earned four RBIs in the game as the Cobras recorded 16 hits. Newberry could not convert baserunners into runs often, stranding 12 runners on base.

The Cobras opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Lynch, followed by an RBI from Taber. Newberry stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the third and Coker responded with three more runs, including a two-run single by Taber to make it 6-0. The lead was extended to 12-0 in the bottom of the fifth with Brinley Griffin (Port Saint John, Fla.) and Dan Hiatt (Elwood, Ind.) recording two RBIs apiece and Jordan Buenting (Ankeny, Iowa) and Taber each driving in a run. Coker added another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 13-0.

Newberry put its first run on the board in the top of the seventh when Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) reached on an error and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Rohena's RBI groundout to first cut the lead to 13-1.

The scarlet and gray led off the top of the eighth with four consecutive singles, including a two-run hit by Darr. Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) scored on a passed ball to make it 13-5. Unfortunately, Coker scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend the margin back to 13 runs and held Newberry scoreless in the top of the ninth to record the win.
