ROME, Ga. - With the start of the Major League Baseball season today, the tightening of rosters league-wide assigns players throughout the minor league system. Former Newberry College star Thomas Berryhill will start the season with the Rome Braves of the Class A South Atlantic League, giving Newberry fans many chances to see the Aynor native pitch in person.
In his role as a closer, Berryhill is likely to see plenty of time for the Rome Braves after a solid season playing for the Appalachian League's Danville Braves in 2009. Berryhill earned a 1-1 record with six saves in 16 appearances with a 2.55 ERA in his first season as a professional, striking out 12 batters in 17.2 innings.
Newberry fans looking for a chance to see Berryhill pitch in person will get their chance early, as the Rome Braves start the season on an eight-game road trip. The season opens this Thursday, with the Braves playing four games at the Kannapolis Intimidators. The Braves pay a visit to Greenville, S.C., from Monday, April 12, through Thursday, April 15.
Berryhill's next visit to the area will occur Saturday, April 24, through Tuesday, April 27, as the Rome Braves visit the Charleston RiverDogs.
