Baseball swept by Tusculum despite furious comeback in opener
Saturday, April 3, 2010

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry College baseball team was swept by Tusculum College in Saturday's doubleheader, 12-11 and 18-3, to lose the South Atlantic Conference series at Pioneer Park.

With Saturday's results, Newberry falls to 12-24 overall and 1-17 in SAC play, while the Pioneers are now 23-13 overall and 10-8 in the SAC.

Newberry's upcoming schedule is jam-packed with five games in the next week. The scarlet and gray travel to Hartsville on Tuesday to take on the Coker Cobras before welcoming the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University to the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start. Gardner-Webb's visit will mark the first appearance by a Division I squad at the Smith Road Complex. Newberry returns to Tennessee next weekend for a three-game South Atlantic Conference set with the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters on Friday and Saturday.

Game One: Tusculum 12, Newberry 11
Newberry stormed back from an eight-run deficit to tie the game in the ninth inning, but Sean Cotten (Mooresville, N.C.) blasted a walkoff homerun to lead off the bottom of the ninth to give the hosts the win.

Tusculum took the lead in the bottom of the second on a double from Matt Henriksen (Hingham, Mass.), but Newberry took the lead with two outs in top of the third on an RBI single from Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) and a run-scoring double by Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico).

The Pioneers broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fourth and four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) earned a run for Newberry in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly, giving the hosts an 11-3 lead after six frames.

Newberry's rally began in the top of the seventh. The scarlet and gray batted around the order after Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI single by Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.). Rohena and Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) pushed two more runs across and Love hit a two-run double with two outs to narrow the gap to 11-8.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Newberry came on strong to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) led off with a single and advanced all the way to third on an error. Back-to-back walks drawn by Love and Bley loaded the bases with no outs. Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) hit an RBI single and Morin's groundout to first scored a run. After pinch hitter Keke Wadsworth (Pomaria, S.C.) was intentionally walked, Rosa drew a walk to tie the game at 11-all before an inning-ending double play.

Unfortunately for Newberry, that lead lasted only two pitches into the bottom of the ninth as Cotten hit his second homer of the game over the wall in left field to end the game.

Wade Ruff (0-1; Rock Hill, S.C.) was tagged with the loss after allowing the walkoff homer. Newberry starter Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) went 5-1/3 innings, allowing 10 runs - nine earned - on 15 hits, striking out one. Tusculum starter Taylor Rakes (Norcross, Ga.) allowed six runs in 6-1/3 innings, while Cy Young (Salisbury, N.C.) earned the win after inducing the double play to end the top of the ninth.
