Tusculum takes series opener, 11-5
Friday, April 2, 2010

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry College baseball team out-hit Tusculum College on Friday night, but the home standing Pioneers made the most of scoring opportunities to take an 11-5 win in the opener of the South Atlantic Conference series.

Newberry falls to 12-22 overall and 1-15 in SAC play, while Tusculum takes a 21-13 overall record and 8-8 SAC mark into tomorrow's 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Tusculum opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun from Jared Richmond (Fort Smith, Ark.). The Pioneers tacked on three runs with two outs in the second. Payden Houser (Lincolnton, N.C.) inside the park homer and two batters later, Matt Henriksen (Hingham, Mass.) hit a two-run homer to make it a 4-0 game.

Newberry cut it to 4-1 on an RBI single from Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) in the top of the third. TC's Rolondo Bonner (Garner, N.C.) hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-1 game. Bonner and Henriksen extended the Pioneers' lead to 9-1 in the sixth with a two-run single by Bonner and Henriksen's sacrifice fly. Paul Finger made it a 10-1 game in the seventh with an RBI single that drove Newberry starter Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) from the game.

The scarlet and gray started the top of the eighth off with a bang as Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.), Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) and Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) each earned hits on the first three pitches of the inning. Love and Horvath earned RBIs, as did Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) later in the inning to make it 10-4. Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, N.Y.)'s run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame made it an 11-4 contest going into the final inning.

Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) led off with a single, but was put out on a fielders' choice when Rohena reached first and advanced to second on an error. A passed ball put Rohena on third and a two-out error allowed Rohena to score and make it 11-5. Unfortunately, a Newberry groundout ended the game on a close play at first.

Gartman was Newberry's offensive leader, going 3-for-5 in the game. Labrador, Love and Horvath each recorded two hits in the game with Love and Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) notching doubles. Bonner was TC's leader, going 2-for-2 with four RBIs, while Henriksen recorded three RBIs.

Roman (2-6) was hit with the loss after allowing 10 runs - six earned - on eight hits and four walks in 6-2/3 innings, striking out four. Tyler Collins (4-1; Morristown, Tenn.) gave up 11 hits in the game, but allowed only four earned runs in 7-1/3 innings.
