Wingate sweeps Newberry with two wins Saturday
Saturday, March 27, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team dropped both ends of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader to the Wingate Bulldogs at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. The Bulldogs won the first game, 11-4, and took a 15-2 win in the second game.

Newberry is now 12-20 overall and 1-14 in SAC play. The scarlet and gray will travel to Hickory, N.C., on Monday for a non-conference game at Lenoir-Rhyne before returning home on Tuesday to host Lander for a 7 p.m. tilt. Wingate is now 19-10 overall and 14-4 in SAC play and hosts Limestone on Monday night.

Game One: Wingate 11, Newberry 4
Wingate jumped out to an early lead and steadily added to the total to earn the victory in the first game. The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead on an RBI double from Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) and run-scoring singles from Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) and Tres Ramirez (Ocala, Fla.).

Newberry's Terrence Gray (Prosperity, S.C.) led off the bottom of the first with a walk and later scored on an RBI single from Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.). Unfortunately, a groundout to end the inning left runners stranded on second and third.

Newberry starter Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) got into a jam in the top of the third, as the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs on two errors and a single. But the senior was bailed out as shortstop Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) snagged a line drive from Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.), tagged second before the runner could retreat and made a quick throw to first and turn the very rare triple play.

Wingate scored on a dropped fly ball with two outs in the fourth inning and an RBI single from Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, N.C.) in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Newberry narrowed that to a 5-2 deficit in the bottom of the fifth when Cox hit a two-out double and was driven home on an RBI single from Gray.

Karr's RBI single in the top of the sixth gave the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead, but Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) cut that lead in half in the bottom of the seventh with a pinch hit two-out, two-run double to make it 6-4. But the Bulldogs' pulled away in the late innings of the game with a two-run double by McPherson in the eighth as well as a run-scoring double by Taylor Honeycutt (Indian Trail, N.C.) and a two-run homer from Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) in the ninth.

Bennett (2-5) was tagged with the loss after 7-1/3 innings of work, allowing seven earned runs. Defending SAC Pitcher of the Week Chris Nelson (4-0; Greenville, N.C.) earned the win after 6-1/3 innings of work, allowing four earned runs on three hits. Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) earned his fourth save of the season after allowing no runs in 2-2/3 innings.

Darr was 2-for-4 at the plate for Newberry and was the only member of the home team with multiple hits in the game. Vazquez went 5-for-6 for the Bulldogs with four runs scored and two RBIs. Six Bulldogs recorded multiple hits in the game.

Game Two: Wingate 15, Newberry 2
Two big Bulldog innings in the early going kept Newberry at bay, as the guests scored the first 11 runs of the game in the first three innings.

WU's McPherson and Ramirez each tallied two RBIs in the first inning to stake the visitors to a very early 4-0 lead. Newberry stranded runners on third base in each of the first two innings before the Bulldogs exploded for seven runs in the third. Siega-Riz hit a bases-clearing three-run triple and Logan Isaacs (Wakefield, N.C.) hit a three-run homer off of the right-field scoreboard with two outs.

Newberry scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third when Gartman scored after Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) reached on an error with two out. Wingate continued to stretch the lead in the fifth and sixth, as Vazquez hit an RBI single in the fifth and Yeung recorded an RBI single and Siega-Riz drove him home with a triple in the sixth.

Keke Wadsworth (Pomaria, S.C.) got Newberry's second run on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a run-scoring single up the middle to drive home Cox. An RBI single from Cale Rogers (Snow Camp, N.C.) in the seventh capped the scoring.
