Wingate takes series opener from Newberry, 10-3
Friday, March 26, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team led Wingate University, 3-1, after five innings, but nine unanswered runs gave the visiting Bulldogs a 10-3 win in the opener of the South Atlantic Conference series at the Smith Road Complex on Friday night.

Newberry falls to 12-18 overall and 1-12 in SAC play, while the Bulldogs move to 17-10 overall and 12-4 in the SAC. The two teams will meet up for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday to wrap up the series.

Wingate opened the scoring in the top of the second when Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, N.C.) hit a double off of the fence in right-center to drive in Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) and make it a 1-0 game.

Newberry responded in the bottom of the fourth after Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) led off by reaching second base on a throwing error. Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) tied the game by fisting an RBI single up the middle. Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) reached on a fielders' choice and Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) followed that up with an RBI double to right. Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) gave Newberry the 3-1 lead with a two-out RBI single.

Newberry starter Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) was solid through five innings, but the Bulldogs bit back in the sixth. Ethan Strickland (Dunn, N.C.) led off the frame with a single and Yeung tied up the game with a two-run homer over the fence in right-center. The blast was the first of Yeung's career.

The Bulldogs took the lead later in the inning on an RBI double from Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.). Vazquez scored on a wild pitch to give Wingate a 5-3 lead. Newberry was retired quietly in the bottom of the sixth and the Bulldogs scored five unearned runs and mowed through five Newberry pitchers in the top of the seventh.

Newberry was only able to put two runners on base in the final five innings of the game as Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) hit a single in the seventh and Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) hit a single in the ninth. Wingate starter Tyler Almond (Oakboro, N.C.) pitched eight innings, allowing only two earned runs on five hits while striking out 10 Newberry batters and walking only one. Almond moved to 3-0 on the year, while Roman fell to 2-5 after allowing five earned runs in six innings of work, striking out three and walking four.
