Newberry beats WVSU in marathon game, 5-3
Monday, March 22, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - It took 11 Newberry pitchers and nearly three and a half hours, but the scarlet and gray took advantage of six West Virginia State errors and snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Yellow Jackets at the Smith Road Complex on Monday night.

Newberry moves 12-17 with the win, while WVSU falls to 8-3. The Yellow Jackets were ranked second in the Atlantic Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association entering the game. Both squads face off with Wingate in their next contests, with WVSU traveling to North Carolina for single contests on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Newberry hosts the Bulldogs for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series on Friday and Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the second to start the scoring, with Eric Temple (Pittsburgh, Pa.) dropping a bloop double down the right field line to score Cody Dalton (Charlottesville, Va.), who had reached on an error. Kyle Rucker (Luisa, Va.) scored on a steal of home after beating the rundown on an attempted squeeze play to make it 2-0.

Bo Darby (Logan, W. Va.) made it a 3-0 game, when he led off the third inning with his third homerun of the season - a towering blast to left-center field.

Newberry got one run back in the bottom of the fourth making the most of opportunities given by WVSU. Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He scored when Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) reached on a two-out error to make it a 3-1 game.

Newberry once again capitalized on Yellow Jacket errors in the sixth inning to take the lead. John Gale (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) came in as a relief pitcher for the Yellow Jackets, but his defense gave him little early support, as the first three batters all reached on infield errors to load the bases with no outs. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) drew a walk to make it a 3-2 game and Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) tied the game with an RBI single through the left side. Newberry took the lead at 4-3 as Horvath scored from third when Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) grounded into a double play.

Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) gave Newberry an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as he blasted his fourth homerun of the season into the pond beyond the left field fence with two outs.

A youthful Newberry bullpen was challenged with a quick hook from the coaching staff, but allowed only two earned runs in the contest. After Darby's homerun, seven Newberry pitchers allowed only one hit and issued five walks, with only one runner advancing past second base. Hunter Cox (1-1; Andrews, S.C.) earned the win with 1-1/3 scoreless innings, while Zach Tutak (Palm Coast, Fla.) earned his first career save as he closed out the game with two scoreless innings.
