Newberry drops pair at Catawba
Saturday, March 20, 2010

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry College baseball team dropped two games to Catawba College on Saturday. Newberry fell, 16-9, in the opener and lost, 23-3, in the nightcap.

Newberry is now 11-17 overall and 1-11 in South Atlantic Conference play heading into Monday night's home game against West Virginia State. Catawba is now 22-7 and 9-6 in SAC play.

Monday's game against West Virginia State is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Smith Road Complex.

Game One: Catawba 16, Newberry 9
The Catawba side took advantage of Newberry miscues to put up 10 unearned runs in the first four innings and scored runs late to hold off Newberry.

Catawba scored in the bottom of the first but Newberry answered back with an RBI single from Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.). Catawba took the lead for good in the bottom of the second on a three-run homerun with two outs from Wade Moore (Salisbury, N.C.).

Newberry held Catawba scoreless in the third and put up a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 4-3 game, but Catawba scored six unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away.

Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) hit a solo homerun with two outs in the fifth for his second homerun of the series to make it 10-4. The scarlet and gray chipped away at the lead with one run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to make it 10-8, but Catawba put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull away again. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) hit an RBI single in the eighth before Catawba scored twice more in the bottom of the inning to wrap up the scoring.

The middle of the order was productive for Newberry with Gartman, Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) and Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) all going 3-for-5 in the contest. Dale Bennett (2-4; Summerville, S.C.) was tagged with the loss, allowing 10 runs - none of which were earned - in 3-2/3 innings. Moore led Catawba with four RBIs in the game.
