Roman's 11 Ks and Gartman's homer not enough in 7-3 loss at Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. - Newberry College starting pitcher Chris Roman struck out 11 batters and Sanchez Gartman hit a homerun, but it was not enough as the scarlet and gray fell to Catawba College, 7-3, in the opener of a South Atlantic Conference series at Newman Park.

Newberry falls to 11-15 overall and 1-9 in SAC play, while the Catawba Indians are now 20-7 overall and 7-6 in the SAC. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the series.

After Newberry stranded a runner on third base in the top of the first inning, the Catawba Indians got the first runs on the board on a two-run single from Brett Huffman (Salisbury, N.C.) with two outs. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, N.C.) made it a 3-0 game in the third with a solo homer to center.

Newberry got its first run on the board in the top of the fourth after Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) reached on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) doubled to left-center to make it 3-1. The double was Newberry's first hit of the game. Catawba's Zeb Link (Woodleaf, N.C.) hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning to make it a 4-1 contest.

Catawba extended the lead to 5-1 on an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, but Gartman made it 5-2 in the top of the seventh, when he led off the frame with a homerun to right field, his fourth of the season. Any comeback attempt from Newberry was made more difficult when Catawba put two runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth, but Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) brought one run back with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth.

Roman (2-4; Kissimmee, Fla.) went seven-plus innings, striking out 11 batters, walking five and allowing six runs on six hits. The performance was the third time this season Roman has struck out more than 10 batters in a game. Trevor Mullins (4-1; Jamestown, N.C.) went the distance for Catawba, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out six.

Gartman was Newberry's leading hitter in the game, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) was 2-for-4 in the game. Link was Catawba's leading hitter, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
