Newberry pulls off ninth inning comeback for 11-10 win over Limestone
Tuesday, March 9, 2010

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team saw a six-run lead disappear in the bottom of the eighth inning but a Jose Rosa RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning gave the scarlet and gray a dramatic 11-10 win over the Limestone Saints on Tuesday afternoon.

Newberry (11-10) scored eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but Limestone (9-11) erased that lead with eight runs in the eighth inning. However, Newberry responded with RBI singles from Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) and Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) to head back home with the win. Newberry continues its spring break schedule at home tomorrow with a 7 p.m. contest against Benedict College at the Smith Road Complex.

The Saints got on the board in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.), but Newberry tied the game at 1-all in the top of the fourth when Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) recorded an RBI groundout to score Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska), who had reached base with a leadoff double. However, Limestone responded immediately with a pair of the runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 3-1 game.

After two scoreless innings, the Newberry offense exploded with five runs in the top of the seventh. A three-run double from Pollack was followed by an RBI triple from Keke Wadsworth (Pomaria, S.C.), who was driven home on a Haskins single to make it 6-3. Newberry expanded on the lead with three runs in the eighth on a two-run double from Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) and a triple from Pollack, who finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs.

But the Saints were not deterred by the six-run deficit, putting up seven runs in the eighth. After two walks and a single drove Newberry starter Sean Holsonback (North Augusta, S.C.) from the game, Limestone's Adam Vafides (Niceville, Fla.) hit a two-run double and Josh Troutman (North Augusta, S.C.) recorded the rare two-run sacrifice fly to cut the lead to two runs. Micah Robinson (DeLand, Fla.) tied the game with an RBI single that led to a fielding error that tied the game. He would score on a wild pitch by Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.) to give Limestone the 10-9 lead.

With the backs against the wall, the scarlet and gray came out fighting in the ninth. Haskins led off the inning with a double and scampered home on Horvath's RBI single. A sacrifice bunt and a ground out moved Horvath to third base, but left the game tied with two outs. Rosa came through in the clutch situation, hitting a single that plated Horvath and gave Newberry the 11-10 lead. Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) hit a double, but Rosa was thrown out at the plate to cut the rally short.

Chris Mansbach (Winter Park, Fla.) and Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) combined to go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth and give Newberry the victory. Mansbach picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season, while Roman earned his second save of the year.
