Newberry rallies for dramatic win in doubleheader split against Lenoir-Rhyne
Saturday, March 6, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team rallied for seven runs in the ninth inning to take the first game of a Saturday doubleheader against Lenoir-Rhyne, 17-16, but fell to the Bears in the second game, 11-3.

Newberry moves to 10-10 on the season and 1-4 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Lenoir-Rhyne's record now stands at 7-9 and 3-3 in the SAC.

The scarlet and gray will next travel to Gaffney, S.C., for non-conference tilt against Limestone on Tuesday, March 9. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Game One: Newberry 17, Lenoir-Rhyne 16
Down 16-10 entering the final inning, the scarlet and gray put together seven runs capped by John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) driving in Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) with a walk-off single to left center to give Newberry its first SAC win of the season.

The rally began with Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) coming through with a bases-loaded single to score Hunter Wynn (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Fogarile before Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) brought in Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) with a single to narrow L-R's lead to 16-13. A Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) single scored another and Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) tied up the game with a two-strike, bases-loaded single. Fogarile would then deliver with two outs, sending the scarlet and gray into a frenzy and giving Newberry its highest one-game run total of the season.

Newberry also exploded offensively in the second inning, scoring seven runs. The inning was highlighted by a Chris Love home run to left field that brought in three runs for the home team. The home run marks the second for Love this season. Love finished 4-for-6 with five RBIs. Rosa, Rohena and Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) each finished with two RBIs.

Lenoir-Rhyne scored in all but three innings. The Bears featured two players with four RBIs in Rob Knight and Hank Wofford. Knight went 4-for-4 and outfielder Chris LaVenia went 3-for-4.

Chris Mansbach (Winter Park, Fla.) earned his first win of the season for Newberry with one scoreless ninth inning of relief. His record now stands at 1-0.

Game Two: Lenoir-Rhyne 11, Newberry 3
Lenoir-Rhyne starter Brandon Padgett scattered six hits over six innings to earn a win over the scarlet and gray in the second half of the doubleheader. Newberry scored two runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh, but the potential rally proved too little, too late.

Behind 10-0 in the fifth inning, John Fogarile put Newberry on the board by scoring on an error and Chris Love drove in Jovan Rohena for the scarlet and gray's second run. Newberry looked for more final-inning heroics after Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.) scored on an error but that would be the only run Newberry would score.

Buoyed by a six-run second inning and four-run fifth, the Bears held off Newberry for most of the game. Lenoir-Rhyne first baseman Anthony Sully went 3-4 and four Bears finished the day with two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Chris Love received the loss to move his record to 2-3.
