Newberry nine fall to Lenoir-Rhyne, 5-3
Friday, March 5, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team took an early lead but Lenoir-Rhyne scored four unanswered runs to take a 5-3 victory in South Atlantic Conference play at the Smith Road Complex on Friday night.

Newberry (9-9, 0-4 SAC) stranded five runners in scoring position and Lenoir-Rhyne (6-8, 2-2 SAC) took the lead on a bases-loaded double by Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, N.C.) in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth to hold on to the win.

The scarlet and gray opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) led off with back-to-back singles. Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) grounded out to second to move the runners and L-R first baseman Colton Hansley (Asheville, N.C.) attempted to double off Labrador at third. However, his throw was errant, allowing both runners to come home and give Newberry the early 2-0 lead.

L-R cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on an RBI single by Alex Cooks (Tampa, Fla.), but Newberry responded in the bottom of the fourth after Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) scored on another Hansley error to make it 3-1.

Newberry starter Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.; 2-2) was solid through the first six innings of the game, but the Bears' bats got hot in the seventh, tagging the senior for five hits. Rob Knight (Sterling Heights, Mich.) cut the lead to 3-2 with an RBI single that loaded the bases and forced Bennett out of the game. Freshman Cory Quackenbush (Oviedo, Fla.) entered the game and gave up the go-ahead double to Andrews.

The Bears earned the insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Chris LaVenia (Clearwater, Fla.) after an error on a failed pickoff put Brian Dice (Hickory, N.C.) on third base. Newberry left a runner on second base in the bottom of the eighth and solid Bear defense in the bottom of the ninth gave the guests the win.

Gartman and Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) each went 2-for-4 for Newberry and were the only NC players with multiple hits. Bennett went 6-2/3 innings, allowing four runs - three earned - on eight hits with four strikeouts. Lenoir-Rhyne's Chris Henderson (Lincolnton, N.C.; 2-2) earned a complete game win despite throwing 141 pitches in the game. He allowed three runs - all unearned - on eight hits and struck out eight Newberry batters. Evan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C.), Andrews and LaVenia each collected two hits and Andrews' double was the only extra base hit in the game by either team.

The two teams will meet up at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m. to close out the SAC series with a doubleheader.
