Baseball drops series finale to Carson-Newman, 11-2
Sunday, February 28, 2010

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College baseball team fell to Carson-Newman, 11-2, in the third game of the South Atlantic Conference weekend series at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

Newberry falls to 9-8 overall and 0-3 in SAC play, while Carson-Newman is now 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the league. Newberry returns to action next week with four games against Lenoir-Rhyne. The scarlet and gray travel to Hickory for a non-conference game against the Bears at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while the three-game SAC series between the two Lutheran rivals begins at 7 p.m. Friday at the Smith Road Complex.

Newberry took an early lead in the top of the first after Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) hit a one-out double and was driven home on a two-out RBI single by Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.). Unfortunately for Newberry, the Eagles jumped on starter Chris Love (2-2, Columbia, S.C.) early. The first four batters all reached base and Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a two-run single. The first out of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) and Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and Lance Reed (Elizabethton, Tenn.) added RBI singles to make it 5-1 after just one inning.

Newberry got a run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout from Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) to make it 5-2, but Carson-Newman extended the lead in the bottom of the frame. Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a two-run single and later scored on a wild pitch by Newberry reliever Sean Holsonback (North Augusta, S.C.) to make it an 8-2 game. The Eagles tagged three more runs on in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Aaron Vargas (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and a two-run double by Patterson.

The scarlet and gray left the bases loaded in the eighth inning and were unable to score again in the game to lose their fourth straight. No Newberry player recorded multiple hits in the game, though Bley and Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) each hit doubles in the game. C-N's Patterson was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Love was tagged with the loss after allowing eight earned runs on seven hits in 3-1/3 innings of work with three strikeouts. Ryan Hendrickson (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) earned the win in relief for Carson-Newman after 2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Wes McIntyre (Chattanooga, Tenn.) gave up two earned runs in 3-2/3 innings, but the Eagle bullpen held Newberry scoreless.
