Newberry nine swept by Carson-Newman in conference opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College baseball team was swept by Carson-Newman in its South Atlantic Conference opening doubleheader on Saturday. The Eagles won the first game, 9-1, and won the second game, 7-2.

With the losses, Newberry's record now stands at 9-7 overall and 0-2 in SAC play, while Carson-Newman is 6-6 overall and 3-2 in SAC action. The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at C-N's Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

Game One: Carson-Newman 9, Newberry 1
Newberry scored in the top of the first, but the Eagles earned the win on the strength of three homeruns and a complete game five-hitter from Austin Bridgewater.

Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) led off the game with a single and scored when Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) reached on an error. C-N tied the game in the bottom of the second as Wes Dozier's (Cornelious, N.C.) two-out double to right-center plated Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.), who reached on a fielder's choice, to make it a 1-1 game. The Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third when Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) ripped a two-out double down the line in left to score Mason Guymon (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), who singled to lead off the frame. Carson-Newman would move ahead 4-1 with two runs in the fourth.

Lamson led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season, a solo homer to centerfield. Long followed with a triple off the wall in left-center. He would score on a one-out double by Cody Nix (Cartersville, Ga.). The Eagles would take advantage of two Newberry errors in the fifth to as Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) reached on an error to lead off the inning and later scored to push it out to 5-1.

Rogers finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Lamson and Long each had two hits in four plate appearances. Labrador led Newberry with a 2-for-5 afternoon and scored Newberry's only run. Starter Chris Roman (2-2) took the loss for Newberry.

Game Two: Carson-Newman 7, Newberry 2
Carson-Newman's Derek Long homered twice and starter Cy Fraker (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined with D.J. Ferguson (Jupiter, Fla.) to allow five hits and two unearned runs as the Eagles beat Newberry in game two, 7-2.

Long drilled solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to help Eagles break open a 2-2 game. The senior drove an offering from Newberry starter Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.; 2-1) over the right field fence to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. He would add an insurance run in the sixth with a solo shot to left-center.

Fraker struck out three in four innings of work. He pitched of jam in the fourth after two C-N errors, getting Labrador to ground out to end the inning.

Ferguson walked one and hit a batter, he also allowed two hits, but the senior forced two double-play balls in the fifth and sixth innings to pick up the Eagles' first save of the season. Aaron Vargas (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) put the game away with a two-run single later in the sixth to make it 7-2. He finished the game 2-for-4.

Jeff Lockwood and Corey Lamson each had RBI singles in the first inning as C-N built an early 2-0 lead. Newberry would rally to tie it at 2-2, behind three Carson-Newman errors, before the Eagles would pull away in the final innings. First baseman Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) led Newberry with two hits.
