Newberry's ninth inning rally falls short as No. 3 Francis Marion escapes with 5-4 win
Tuesday, February 23, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team mounted two rallies in the late innings after falling behind early, but No. 3 Francis Marion managed to escape the Smith Road Complex with a 5-4 win in non-conference action Tuesday.

Newberry moves to 9-5 overall, while Francis Marion's record goes to 9-2. Newberry returns to action on Friday with the first of a three-game series at Carson-Newman. First pitch at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex in Jefferson City, Tenn., is set for 2 p.m.

Francis Marion got on the board in the top of the first thanks in large part to a triple to left field by Alex Lee (Blythewood, S.C.). Lee was driven home on a single to center by Tyler Boyd (Lamar, S.C.) to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) quickly evened the game back up in the bottom of the first, when he smashed his third homerun of the season down the right field line to make it a 1-1 game.

The Patriots regained the lead in the top of the second on a run-scoring single by Graham Couch (Bishopville, S.C.) and an RBI groundout from Lee to make it a 3-1 game after two complete innings. A sacrifice fly from Barret Kleinknecht (Florence, S.C.) in the fourth and an RBI double by Logan Bland (Charleston, S.C.) in the fifth gave FMU its largest lead of the game at 5-1.

Newberry refused to bow out and started the comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) led off the inning by beating out an infield single and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) hit a bloop double down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. After a pair of fly outs, Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) hit a rocket that was unable to be contained by the Patriot infield, allowing two runners to score and cut the lead to 5-3.

In the seventh, C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) hit a one-out double and Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) walked to put two runners on with one out. After a fielders' choice moved pinch runner Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) to third, Vogel was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two out. However, Gartman was only able to pop out in foul territory to leave the bases full.

Newberry's last shot came in the bottom of the ninth. Rohena hit a one-out double to left field and Bley smacked a double down the left field line to plate Rohena and cut the lead to 5-4. Vogel struck out and Gartman was intentionally walked. But FMU closer Brandon Forshee (Jacksonville, Fla.) was able to strike out Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) to earn his fifth save of the young season.

Francis Marion starter Erik Sommerville (Charlotte, N.C.) earned the win to move to 3-0 on the year after striking out five and allowing three earned runs on six hits in six innings. Newberry starter Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) was tagged with the loss to move to 0-1 after allowing three earned runs in two innings on five hits. Wayne Potts (Orlando, Fla.) and Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) kept Newberry's comeback hopes alive as the pair combined for four innings of scoreless relief on only three hits.
