Sunday, February 21, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team ended a four-game series by splitting a doubleheader with Seton Hill. Newberry won the first game, 4-2, while the Griffins won the second game, 9-2.

Newberry is now 9-4 on the season, while Seton Hill is now 1-3. The loss in the second game snapped a six-game Newberry winning streak. Newberry hosts No. 7 Francis Marion at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Seton Hill returns to action on Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Game One: Newberry 4, Seton Hill 2
Newberry starting pitcher Sean Holsonback (North Augusta, S.C.) allowed only one unearned run in 5-1/3 innings and Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) hit a towering homerun to right field in a 4-2 win in the first game of the day.

Newberry got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) and C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) each drove in run to take a 2-0 lead. The scarlet and gray stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, but put up the game-winning runs in the bottom of the fifth. Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) reached on a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring after a pair of wild pitches. Gartman smashed his second homerun of the season to right field to give Newberry the 4-0 lead.

Pat Trettel (Wexford, Pa.) drove in a run in the top of the sixth and Arnaldo Rincones (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a pinch-hit homerun to left center in the top of the seventh, but Gary Hersey (Key West, Fla.) escaped the inning with the save. Holsonback moves to 1-2 on the season after allowing one unearned run in 5-1/3 innings on just two hits, striking out six and walking three.
