Newberry pitchers dominate in sweep of Seton Hill
Saturday, February 20, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team followed impressive pitching performances from Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) to sweep a doubleheader from the Seton Hill University Griffins at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. Newberry won the first game, 8-1, and took a 3-1 decision in the second game.

The scarlet and gray have now won five straight games and seven of the last eight to move to 8-3 on the season. Seton Hill falls to 0-2 on the year. The two teams will meet in another doubleheader tomorrow at noon.

Game One: Newberry 8, Seton Hill 1
Roman struck out 16 batters and only gave up three hits and one unearned run to cruise to a complete game win in the first half of the doubleheader.

The 16 K's is the second-most in Newberry history and is tied for the fourth-most in a single game in the history of the South Atlantic Conference. Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) holds the Newberry record with 17 strikeouts against Brevard in 2008.

Roman struck out nine of the first 10 batters he saw, and did not allow a runner on base until the top of the fourth when David McCarthy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) reached on a dropped third strike. However, McCarthy was caught stealing to erase the baserunner. Pat Trettel (Wexford, Pa.) hit a single through the right side later in the inning to break up the no-hit bid.

Newberry did not score until the bottom of the fourth, when Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Vogel moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) single to right center to give Newberry the 1-0 lead.

The scarlet and gray added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) and a two-run double from Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska). Seton Hill scored its only run of the game in the top of the sixth, when a pair of Newberry errors made it a 4-1 game.

Newberry broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth. Kyle Christian (Charleston, S.C.) scored on a passed ball and Love made the Griffins pay for loading the bases with miscues when he smacked a three-run triple to left-center to close out the scoring.

Vogel went 2-for-4 in the game with three runs scored, while Love was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) went 2-for-3, while Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) scored two runs.

Game Two: Newberry 3, Seton Hill 1
Bennett put on an inspired pitching performance in the nightcap, allowing only four baserunners in a quick seven inning game. The game took only an hour and 45 minutes to complete and Bennett did not allow a Griffin on base after the fourth inning.

Seton Hill was only able to get to Bennett in the top of the first. J.R. Tenney (Buckhannon, W. Va.) hit a single and moved to second on a groundout and scored on an RBI single from Mark Henry (Mamont, Pa.) to give SHU its first lead of the season.

SHU starter Brian Warheit (Butler, Pa.) kept Newberry off of the scoreboard until the bottom of the third. Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) scored on an RBI single from Gartman to tie the game with two outs. Vogel and Gartman executed a perfect first-and-third play with Vogel crossing the plate before Gartman was tagged out to give Newberry the 2-1 lead.

Bennett was masterful for the rest of the game and was rewarded with an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, when Labrador's two-out RBI double brought home Haskins to make it 3-1. Newberry threatened again in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but SHU reliever Clint White (Pittsburgh, Pa.) left the bases full.
